The barge is owned by Ella Gault , who has a loveless marriage with her husband Les , and has hired the young and cocky Joe Taylor , who fancies himself a writer. Much of the changes are matter of fact, as is the sex and the murder of a young woman. I picked up this book because most of the reviewers said that it reminded them of The Outsider by Albert Camus. I felt quite mesmerised by the descriptions of flesh tones, particularly in relation to colours. I'd be interested though to see the film adaptation, as I've heard good things about it and it has a very good cast. I could draw no path to or from Genesis. And even if she were the mistress of one of them, I had created the thing for which I felt the sense of loss and it was not anyone else's to be enjoyed.

He lived in Paris in the early 1950s and edited the literary magazine Merlin, which published Henry Miller, Samuel Beckett, Christopher Logue and Pablo Neruda, among others. Just reread and found that sentence, which was actually a long passage. I read a little of the life of Trocchi before I read this and his abilities as a poet do not go unused in this book. If you need to be told what is happening and why, this is not for you. I believe he died of a heroin overdose. Talking of art, it is also an extraordinarily painterly book as well as being a cinematic book, not the same thing. In the past, Joe meets Cathie on a beach and the two soon are living together.

He won the award for Best New British Feature at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and the for British Newcomer of the Year. There is some fine descriptive writing in the novel, and although it was fist published in 1954 it still stands up as a book, and a fine read. The book is probably Trocchi's most well-known, and I imagine it was very scandalous at the time it was published 1954 , but for the most part I didn't really understand the hype. It does pack a lot into its 160 pages, and the fact that there is no actual resolution to the story shows what a fine writer and storyteller Trochi is. Lawrence's classic book but that one is wordy being the old-school literary type of English novels. Not a contrived, plot dependent series of revelations. That said, it's absorbing and short and gives a good idea of a certain type of working class, Scottish life in the middle of the last century.

Another Trocchi book I read not so long ago, Cain's Book, has haunted me to greater and greater degrees since. It obviously stays with you. You will receive a weekly newsletter full of movie-related tidbits, articles, trailers, even the occasional streamable movie. He lived in Paris in the early 1950s and edited the literary magazine Merlin, which published Henry Miller, Samuel Beckett, Christopher Logue and Pablo Neruda, among others. After experiencing both, I still have no idea who the Adam of the title is supposed to be, because nobody in the story has that nomenclature, even Joe, the chain-smoking character who narrates the entire tale in first person. I have one question for anyone out there who might have a feasible answer: the title confounds me.

Of potential interest to those interested in expanding their knowledge of the beat writers or of modern Scottish literature, but unlikely to move others. Here, the narrator who is working on a barge going down a Scottish canal falls for the skipper's wife. His early novel Young Adam 1954 was adapted into a film starring Ewan McGregor and Tilda Swinton in 2003. Club members also get access to our members-only section on RogerEbert. In the Scotland of the 1950s, Joe is a loner who aimlessly wanders the countryside, sleeping with whatever woman is to hand, despite his apparent lack of charm or other attractiveness.

Young Adam Review

There cannot be peace unless the woman or one of the men leaves. Life is simply never quite what we think it is. But I have given one star for each of the things Scottish novels so frequently have: murder, lots of drinking, and casual, mechanical sex. Often I find myself anxious to become involved with other people, but I am no sooner involved than I wish to be free again. I also really enjoyed the fact that the majority of the setting was in Glasgow - it always gives me a good feeling to hear of streets, parks, and other locations that I am personally familiar with.

Joe is a drifter who works as a hired hand on a barge traveling the Clyde River between Glasgow and Edinburgh. The Pete Best of the Beat generation, Trocchi ran with Ginsberg, Burroughs, et al, but never achieved their lasting fame. . Moreover, Mackenzie's adaptation of Alexander Trocchi's novel will surely cause a resurgence of interest in the long-undervalued Scottish 'Beat' writer, who has been championed by Irvine Welsh, William Burroughs and Leonard Cohen. This is not the most immediately accessible book or story, we do not find ourselves routing for the books central character Adam played by the actor Ewan MacGregor in the film adaptation. I enjoyed this book for the most part, but unfortunately the pace was just far too slow for me in the end.

Another thesis could be written about 'yellow', the whole thing is held together by whatever this yellow is, besides its colour but includingg that of course. He is not a rapist, but he has only one purpose in his mind, and some women find that intensity of focus to be exciting. I admit, I read it after watching the movie, and because Ewan McGregor was in the movie, and he is my favorite actor. I never thought that any book can even come close to make me feel what I felt when I read Camus's masterpiece. Artist Bio Adam Young is best known for his whimsical and colourful depictions of Eastern Canada, specifically Newfoundland. Read this a long, long time ago and a sentence still keeps haunting me, just the gist of it, not the exact words. I think he is wrong. But I will remain certain, if only in my isolation, that it is a brilliant work of art. This is not the most immediately accessible book or story, we do not find ourselves routing for the books central character Adam played by the actor Ewan MacGregor in the film adaptation. Joe is a hard case. The book, unless I am remembering this wrong, was actually written in the 50's? The book was made into a breathtaking film with Ewan McGregor and Tilda Swinton in which there is a full frontal of McGregor naked that was just as haunting and startling as that sentence. He excels at showing the writer's vanity in captain's hat and jacket, McGregor looks like a , but not what makes him tick.

Young Adam by Alexander Trocchi

I'm afraid that the thrill will seem silly. Mackenzie may have realized the shortcomings in Trocchi's prose or decided he didn't want to condemn his film commercially. It is bereft of any emotion that reminded me of Albert Camus' except for its absurdism and James Cain's for the plot: a man hired by a couple seduces the wife to be his lover. The book follows the narrator, Jack, a drifter who is working for Leslie, the skipper of a barge on the canal linking Glasgow and Edinburgh. And if you say that Joe's way of seeing things is weird, or perverse, or inhuman, or immoral or whatever else you can put together from the official libraries of appropriate res ponse, don't forget that this is not a novel about a sick mind but about how the mind in general works.
